Legal Aid Organizations

East Bay Community Law Center

The Homelessness program advocates for the civil and human rights of people experiencing homelessness. Services are mainly provided through community outreach, and include legal advice and representation on:

    • Encampment eviction
    • Property and vehicle confiscation
    • Reasonable accommodation requests to City Government and Transitional Housing Providers
    • Parental rights related to homelessness
    • Affidavit support for people experiencing homelessness to obtain free identification and birth certificates
    • Rights related to transitional housing

The Homeless Action Center (HAC) provides free, high-quality public benefits advocacy to unhoused and disabled residents of Alameda County.  HAC’s attorneys and advocates specialize in helping people access

    • Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
    • Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)
    • Cash Assistance Program for Immigrants (CAPI)
    • Obtain and retain General Assistance (GA—cash aid for individuals)
    • CalWORKs (cash aid for families with minor children), CalFresh (food stamps)
    • Medi-Cal

Bay Area Legal Aid

Confidential help is available 24/7 in over 300 languages. Callers can be directed to resources such as affordable housing, job training, childcare, legal assistance, emergency shelter, food, transportation, shower/laundry facilities, healthcare referrals, disaster relief assistance, etc.

Services available to all Oakland residents experiencing a housing crisis who have a household income at or below 30% of Area Median Income, with priority to Voucher Holders.

Alameda County Health Care for the Homeless

Services: Coordinates a network of health centers and community- based organizations to increase access and improve care for people experiencing homelessness in Alameda County.  Services include:

    • Substance use treatment

St. Vincent de Paul of Alameda

Free dining room and community center provides warm meals and supplementary programs for the unhoused/housing insecure, food insecure, and impoverished residents in Oakland.  Services include:

    • Mail Service (with mail agreement)
